What is Deep brain stimulation (DBS)?
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical treatment that involves implantation of a medical device made by Medtronics, which sends electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain. DBS has provided remarkable benefits for patients with difficult to treat Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, and tremor. DBS was approved by the FDA for the treatment of Essential Tremor in 1997, Parkinson’s disease in 2002, and dystonia in 2003. Other uses for DBS are currently under evaluation in research protocols around the world.
What is the DBS treatment team?
DBS requires a multidisciplinary team for proper evaluation of potential surgical candidates as well as to perform postoperative care. Dr. Klos’ team provides pre-surgical screening including comprehensive clinical exams, cognitive testing, psychological testing, review of imaging, and education. Dr. Klos then refers patients for evaluation and DBS surgery with Dr. Christopher Barry in Oklahoma City. After surgery, Dr. Klos’ team assists with postoperative evaluations and DBS programming. Dr. Klos recommends are possible medication adjustments at the time of DBS programming. Optimal results often involve numerous programming sessions and time. Eventually, the motor symptoms of these various conditions are optimally controlled.
